I believe these were hand made by my step-mother who hailed from the Oregon ‘high country’. She had a very hard life I’ve only recently learned.
Based on her writings I see these and her other moccasins (I have all three pairs listed) as representations of a new page in her life as she navigated her way through herself post violent rape. Seven broken ribs, nose, teeth, massive blood loss, didn’t speak for seven months. She lost custody of her two daughters. (To this day I wonder if they know this is why she left and wonder how much peace it could possibly bring them to know it was in no way a rejection of them...) She spoke of a budding relationship with a tall, handsome gentleman (not my dad) and what she wore. Makeup was a new found indulgence as she mentions it specifically. I imagine there wasn’t money for such things.
Needless to say she developed an ‘interesting’ personality from what must have been utter survival instincts starting in early childhood. She was perfect for my father.
She stood by him to the end. He didn’t deserve that. I found a note from one of her nurses declining a date my father had invited her on. As his wife lay dying. But death is funny and so are people so maybe I shouldn’t judge.
I found a note she had written to my father. This was very early in their relationship. It was heartbreaking. This was the first thing of hers I read. It was at that moment that I realized 20-whatever years later (I’m 45) that she was a woman that loved my father. A messed up, dysfunctional woman trying to find love and comfort and security. Just like me. Just like my mom. Women that loved my dad. Women that suffered him out of our own spiritual damage. And I loved her.
